What if psychotherapy is more than clinical practice- what if it is sacred ground?
In this thought-provoking lecture, Maryka Potgieter explores psychotherapy as a deeply human and potentially transformative encounter where spirit and self meet. Drawing on the work of Martin Buber, Carl Rogers, and Abraham Maslow, this presentation reimagines the therapeutic relationship as a space of mutual presence, meaning-making, and self-transcendence.
Engaging recent developments in Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy (SIP), the lecture invites us to reconsider the role of spirituality in therapeutic practice, not as an optional add-on, but as central to understanding the human person. At the intersection of psychospiritual care and spiritual depth, therapy becomes a place where healing, growth, and transformation unfold through authentic relational encounter.
This paper will be of interest to spiritual care practitioners, therapists, students, and all who are curious about the deeper dimensions of care, presence, and what it means to be fully human.

The years surrounding the beginning of the twentieth century were an age of change in Canadian theology and biblical studies. New scholarship was hotly debated. How did it affect the Church? How did it affect Canadian art and culture even? Even the lifestyles of Theology students could be controversial. This paper explores some of the “great debates” in theology and biblical studies of the time and how they played out not just in scholarly works, but popular culture—including poetry, magazine articles, advertising materials, and more.
