Ruth McCarten passes away; Knox College expresses condolences
Ruth McCarten passed away on February 15, 2023. Ruth served as Knox College Registrar for 15 years, from January 2000 until her retirement in 2015. We remember her as a kind, helpful, and faithful colleague.

Ruth McCarten: November 2, 1950 – February 15, 2023
It is with deep sadness that we announce the untimely passing of Ruth Jean McCarten, Dearest Ruth, Ruthie, Rooty was surrounded and embraced by her loved ones as she was called home, on February 15th, 2023.
Ruth was born in Hamilton, ON and raised in Lowville. She attended school in Lowville, Kilbride and Burlington. Her first job was working at P.L. Robertson in Milton. Her hobbies were ceramics, sewing and knitting.
In September 1975 she married Neil and shared 38 wonderful years with him in Toronto. They made many trips to Cuba as well as travels to Europe and the US. Ruth spent many of those years working for the Presbyterian Church in Canada, starting as a church secretary, moving to work in the General Assembly office and lastly working until her retirement as Registrar of Knox College. Hospitality was one of Ruth’s gifts and she always had a friendly smile for everyone.
Ruth is predeceased by her husband Neil (2014). Loving sister of Margaret Coughlin (Len) and Louise LePage, and fondly remembered and greatly missed by nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Visitation at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stop light north of QEW), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333), on Friday, February 24th, 2023 from 6:30-9:00 p.m.
Funeral service will be held at St. George’s Anglican Church, 4691 Palladium Way, Burlington on Saturday, February 25th, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception. Cremation has taken place.
