
Program Overview
The Master of Theology (ThM) is a one-year of advanced theological study offered at Knox College, one of the seven member colleges of the Toronto School of Theology (TST). The degree is conferred conjointly with the University of Toronto (U of T), a globally recognized institution for academic excellence.
This program is designed for students who already hold a graduate theological degree and are seeking to:
- Prepare for doctoral studies in theology or religious studies
- Deepen their expertise in a specific theological discipline
- Advance their academic credentials for teaching, ministry, or scholarly leadership
Students benefit from access to the University of Toronto’s extensive library system, including one of North America’s largest theological collections, as well as writing and research support services, language study resources, and faculty mentorship. Knox College also offers a welcoming graduate student community, spiritual care, and wellness services, ensuring students are supported both academically and personally throughout their studies.

Duration
Normally completed in one (1) year, with a maximum allowable duration of six (6) years.
Delivery
Full-time or part-time available, in-person study.
Degree Conferred By
Conjointly awarded by the University of Toronto and Knox College.
General Areas of Study
- Biblical Studies – with two areas of concentration: Old Testament and New Testament
- Historical Studies
- Pastoral and Practical Theology – with five areas of concentration: homiletics, pastoral theology, religious education, liturgy, and Christian spirituality
- Theological Studies – with four areas of concentration: systematic theology, philosophical theology/philosophy of religion, Christian ethics, and interdisciplinary studies. NOTE: These fields of study are addressed in an ecumenical context and in relation to the wider world and to other religious faiths.
Program Options
Two (2) program options are available:
- Option 1
- Six (6) advanced level semester courses
- A thesis
- Recommended for students preparing for doctoral studies
- Option 2
- Eight (8) semester courses
- An extended major paper
- Designed as a terminal degree; does not provide the basis for entry into a TST doctoral program

Admission Requirements

Minimum Requirements
- Hold a bachelor’s degree, normally in Arts, from a recognized degree granting institution* (An applicant must provide evidence of having completed equivalent studies under a different education system).
AND
- Hold a Master of Divinity degree or an academic masters degree in theological studies providing equivalent theological background of at least two (2) years’ duration from a recognized institution*
- Achieve a minimum CGPA of 3.3/4.0 or greater (equivalent to 77% or a B+)
- Demonstrate English-language proficiency
- Provide evidence of equivalent academic standing if educated outside North America
- Demonstrate competency in relevant academic research language requirements
- Historical Studies Preparation: Requirement for applicants specializing in the history of Christianity
*All theological schools fully accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada are deemed to be recognized institutions.
Admissions to this program are overseen by the Graduate Center for Theological Studies (GCTS) at the Toronto School of Theology (TST). Interested applicants must submit a Graduate Degree Program Application through GCTS at TST.
