PRE-CONVOCATION WORKSHOP, 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., by Professor Jane Dawson
The challenges of parish ministry (in 16th century Scotland)
Reading the Bible; singing in worship; marriage and sexual relations; young people’s place in the church; reconfiguring old church buildings. These are a few of the issues that early ministers faced in creating a Reformed Church in Scotland – and these same issues have clear echoes in today’s world. What can we learn from these challenges in 16th century parish ministry?
Professor Jane Dawson, John Knox biographer and preeminent Scottish Reformation scholar, will introduce Scotland’s parishes in their first 80 years. The workshop group will then examine the particular themes that emerge from that historical period and have strong resonances today.
