J.H. (Hans) Kouwenberg passes away; Knox College expresses condolences
Knox College is very sad to announce the death of the Rev. Dr. J.H. (Hans) Kouwenberg on June 10, 2020, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Kouwenberg served with distinction for almost forty years as a congregational pastor, first as the minister of St. Giles Presbyterian Church, Prince George, B.C. (1973-1993), and then at Calvin Presbyterian Church, Abbotsford, B.C. (1993-2011). In 2007 he was elected moderator of the 133rd General Assembly. Dr. Kouwenberg was active in the work of theological education at all three Presbyterian theological colleges, where he served on boards and committees over many years, including a term as Director of Denominational Formation at St. Andrew’s Hall following his retirement from congregational ministry in 2011.
After studies at Carleton University, Hans graduated from Knox College with the M.Div. and the Diploma in 1973 and later went on to complete a Doctor of Ministry degree at Fuller Theological Seminary. In 2005 he was granted an honorary doctorate degree by Presbyterian College, Montreal, in recognition of his exemplary ministry.
Principal John Vissers said, “The church has lost a generous and faithful servant, and I have lost a dear friend of forty years. Our condolences go out to his wife Colleen and the Kouwenberg family. We give thanks to the Lord for Hans’ life and his deep commitment as a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We’re going to miss him.”
Memorial details will be forthcoming.
