Meghan Patterson awarded Knox College Gold Medal; and other Convocation highlights

Knox College awarded the Gold Medal to Meghan Patterson at the College’s 173rd Convocation on May 10, 2017. Each year the graduating student with the highest academic standing in the program receives the Knox College Gold Medal. Patterson graduated with a Master of Divinity Degree and Diploma of the College.
Including those awarded in absentia, Knox conferred degrees, diplomas, and certificates upon 29 graduates, including: nine receiving the Master of Divinity degree and Diploma of the College; two receiving the Master of Divinity degree and General Assembly Certificate; three receiving the Master of Theological Studies degree, one receiving the Master of Theology degree, and two receiving the Doctor of Ministry degree. Five people received Lay Education certificates, two received Special General Assembly certificates, and four completed denominational requirements. The Convocation recognized two Knox students completing the Doctor of Philosophy degree awarded at the University of St. Michael’s College.
Knox College also granted Doctor of Divinity degrees (honoris causa) to the Rev. Dr. John Crosbie Carr, the Rev. Karen Horst, and the Rev. Dr. Harold G. Wells for their creative and effective church leadership and their scholarly contributions to the Church and academic community.
Dr. Jane Dawson of New College, the University of Edinburgh, gave the Convocation Address, “Is John Knox a name to be proud of?” – highlighting both the accomplishments and weaknesses of John Knox. Professor Dawson is a renowned scholar of the Reformation period in Scotland and author of the definitive biography, John Knox (2015).
The service also included Board Convenor Peter Ross’s words of recognition and gratitude for Knox College Principal Dorcas Gordon. Dr. Gordon concludes 18 years as Knox College Principal in June 2017.
